The family Blondeau-Knaur has its existence
and adventures of its different generations to historical
events and to European turbulences of the last two
centuries. If I tries today to disentangle what that unite
them, it is once time more, the great and the small
History push me irresistibly to make it. In here is the
reason : September end 1990, my girl Marlène, her husband
Karl-Friedrich Bartlewski and myself had left to what was
again the R.D.A. to render there visit to our cousins to
Quedlinburg and Halberstadt. An evening, it was Saturday
22 September, we were united, Daisy Knaur, born Kiessling,
and we three Westerners, in the house of Dietrich
Kiessling and his woman Gisela, in Halberstadt. The date
and the place of this family encounter seem me well to
corroborate what I advanced in my first sentence. The date
of approach : some later days, 3 October 1990, the meeting
of two Germany became an official reality. What put end at
the historical division, RFA-RDA, that lasted since 1945.
The place then : to the month of April 1945, coming from
Magdeburg, my husband, my girl Marlène and myself, in this
morning of Sunday, were fled with other tenants in the
cellar of a house in this same city of Halberstadt. While
American bombs would fall the sky and transformed the city
around us in a field of ruins. To the same moment, my son
Hans and my girl Renate climbed on the roof of a farm in
the village of Westerhausen, distant of some kilometers of
Halberstadt, assisted terrified and anguished to this
frightening spectacle. But return to our current events.
In the course of this family meeting animated, Gisela
Kiessling asked how me, French of origin, I was introduced
in the family Knaur, thinking without doubt that a simple
running of come air from the West it was the cause. The
reply to this question was so complex that I asked to the
assistance if it wanted truly that I return to sources.
And as all the world was of agreement, I began to tell.
What I had not anticipated, Dietrich recorded my impromptu
account, that, in this improvised form, concerned them
strong, but that to remains me incomplète. I have not
réécouté the recorded cassette and do not know therefore
absolutely, how I am me pulled this task. But a thing is
sure : this hatcies complicated that form a family and
that I had tried to disentangle, have continued to shake
in me, to prolong in all sense them. Also, once returned
at me to Freiburg, thrust by some thing of irresistible, I
have decided to tempt a update of facts and family events
that have had no influence on the course of the great
history, but that, in revenge, in the crucial phases of
their déroulement, have been ended by it. Begin with the
preliminary history of two families that did not seem to
be predestined to meet.
After all frontiers, prohibitions that us have
variously separated, we live at this time a period of our
history where the family Blondeau-Knaur is not fissureed.
There is every reason to believe that this state of thing
will last, and it is the task of each of us of work in
this senses. The 33 descendants of the two couples that
are to the origin of this chronicle, are dispersed between
Berlin - Brest - The Martinique, between the Baltic sea
and the Coast of Azure in pass by Italy of the North. I
represent them as so much points of anchorage, thread that
intermingled to all these that create men of willingness,
will form hatcies of an Europe that the time will
strengthen.
Je
Knaur, geb. Kießling im Hause von Dietrich Kießling und
seiner Frau Gisela in Halberstadt. Zeitpunkt und Ort
dieses gemütlichen Zusammenseins scheinen mir eine
Bestätigung dessen, was ich eingangs äußerte- Der
befreundeten Familie in ebenderselben Stadt Halberstadt,
Herrn Pfarrers Steinwachs hatten. Aber zurück in die
Gegenwart: Im Verlauf der angeregten Unterhaltung wurden
mir Fragen gestellt über unsere verwandschaftlichen
Beziehungen zueinander.
hatte. Was so aufgezeichnet wurde, habe ich nicht
wiedergehört; sicherlich war es nicht vollständig,
vielleicht sogar fehlerhaft.
Without renouncing "the steeple spirit,
primary school to the patriotism", indispensable to the
development of peoples and to the durability of our
civilization, one can dream that this chronicle of a
family Franco-German, that this 101 volume of our
collection, is the first stone of a bridge that it will be
necessary us to construct betwen France and Germany
approach, between our two countries and Europe then, for
the handwriting of a common history between our peoples
that would make abstraction terrestrial frontiers to
commune in a common spirit, on the stèle of oral survivor
testimonies of war of the XXth century. That is the dream
that we make to the term of this stop and the wish that we
formulate in imagining that others, as passionate as we
have been all along our enterprise, take the relay for the
continuation of our work.
Robert Fouich, class 1941 - Recruitment of
Algiers - number 2105 - is an interesting testimony on a
slice of life of the French Algeria. That is the precise
account of military services or assimilated that he has
undertaken between 1941 and 1945. The author has
accomplished approach its obligatory civil service in
Yards of the Youth 103 in Sidi-Ferruch, in Mahelma.
Liberated in January 1942, he has adhereed to the
association of the Ancient of Yards, in Blida. But,
immediately after the landing of Anglo-Saxons of 8
November 1942, he is mobilized in Yards of the Youth
militarizeed. He is sent to Fort de l'Eau and El Riath, to
Rovigo then to Mouzaïaville and El Affroun. Appointed with
the rank of Assistant, he participates in the chain of
setting of GMC provide by America to France to the Field
of Manoeuvre, in Algiers. He is then assigned to the
School of Pupils officiate in Cherchell where he was in
the 2th promotion Tunisia (Summer 1943) and is appointed
patented Sergeant Chief of Section. He chooses then 7th
RTA, in Sétif, where he orders a platoon of corporal
pupils, before to be going to embark for Italy in Bizerte.
He participates, in the infantry, to the hard combats of
Abruzzes. He is seriously hurt 3 February 1944, on the
Belvédère and has to abandon 10th Company. That is then
the return to Blida, to the center of fracture, the
definitive reform and the reinstatement to the Prefecture
of Algiers. In a last admonishes well documented, Robert
Fouich brings his testimony on the manner some of which
historical events have been lived in Algeria and
mentalities of the period 1940 - 1945. He pulls
enseignements of the victory of the French Expeditionary
Corps in Italy that conquers Rome and reach Sienne.
Evoking the décolonisation, he expresses the hope of a new
French start and thinks possible the narrow relationship
reestablishment between France and the Maghreb. The author
has published in 1985 an important work of references on
Sophia-Antipolis, the first European technopole (320
pages). I am happy to find in this testimony, a comrade of
promotion of the School of Pupils Aspiring Cherchell.
Robert Fouich retraces in these lines a period where the
French Youth of Africa of the north, ally to all their
comrades that had rejoined us in pass by the Spain, would
be avid to participate at the liberation of the
metropolitan territory. The enthusiasm that one sea in the
account is well symptomatique of the state of spirit that
reigned in this period. Thank to Robert Fouich to have
contributed to the knowledge of the mentality of the youth
"Black Foot" in this crucial period of our existence and
thank to the National Association of Cross of War and
Military Value and to its president of the Section of Nice
to fix this testimony to confide it to the posterity.
Yards of the Youth, the School of Pupils
Officiate Cherchell, 7th Regiment of Algerian Tirailleurs,
committed in Italy with the French Expeditionary Corps,
hurt, as much of stops that Robert Fouich crosses with the
faith of the "Black Foot" that commits fully, for the
liberation of his country : France and the safeguard of
its value and which he tells with the concern of the
precision that characterizes all his documents and, in
this case, with helping notes of his notebook of road that
he has held until 2 February 1944 before to fall hurt,
aday later, under balls .
More that an account of warlike events, I have read this testimony as a patriotic chant dedicated to generations that accompany us and to those that follow us as an attestation of France extra-metropolitan as an act of deference to the Homeland mother.
We can then say that the three institutions
particularly interested by the keeping and the scientific
use of memory, proved the interest that they were showing
for the testimonies gathered by the Croix de Guerre and
the Croix de la Valeur Militaire of Nice, in this use
corpus now containing 12,000 pages, asking researchers
from all sciences to give their opinion on the work
carried out and tell which teaching and comments could be
drawn from it. The documents that we are publishing are
part of the collection of 102 volumes already published.
They are an important landmark in our work, and if for the
moment it is rated differently by the public, it will be a
work of reference in several years from now when all the
eye witnesses of the XXth century war and ourselves are
gone.
The eleven years that went by since the
writing the first volume, followed by the publishing
starting in 1985 of the 102 oral testimonies gathered by
the audacious Michel El Baze, transformed bundles of old
papers in historical documents becoming increasingly
interesting. The eleven years started with the dream which
depicted an ideal world in which everybody would be nice,
would be happy to contribute to the revelation of the
story which everybody would be able to tell. This was
without taking into, account the material difficulties, an
human meanness. Our writer did have problems, and still
has some which he faces courageously. So it happened and
due to a flawless tenacity, and an obstinate conviction,
this creation gradually drifted towards a set of works
that deserves the name of collection. The gathering of
those historical archives takes its value from it
numerical importance as well as from the realism of the
narrations which conveys to the events that are described
a light of truth that the historian cannot ignore. And yet
this collection of documents because it is neither
published nor spread around is threatened with oblivion
because its existence is known widely enough. A complete
information has to be started straight away and without
any delay as to the titles of the existing books, their
whereabouts, an we have to find the means of increasing
the number of copies and of libraries who will receive
them. In that respect the arrival of the whole collection
in the Senate library and in the document department of
the Imperial War Museum of Great Britain, in London, after
the institution mentioned in this book ,are reassuring
events, and which convey promises of renown. The national
Association of the Croix de Guerre et de la Valeur
Militaire which is the very first support of this great
epic of the historical memory of our country, continues
according to its possibilities to sponsor this well
deserved encouragement.
Just like the pelican tired after a long
journey", I lay down my work, and produce my balance. Here
is an idea born in 1981, which came into being in 1984, to
end up 9 years later with the 104th volumes of a corpus of
12,000 pages of testimonies, the analysis of which I
introduce here, with the prefaces, post faces, forewords,
warnings, and other introductions to the books, along with
a general index containing 26,173 pointers, which will
enable the researchers to locate exactly his points he is
interested in. But nothing would have been possible
without the guidance of the Nice section of the Croix de
National chairman gave me some help when I needed This
stubbornness of action, I also owe it to the braying of
the Neddies and other heirs to the horrible informers of
the 40's whose anonymous letters and calls, whose meetings
in the associations, committees and lodges of respectable
opinion with the mute consent of the cowards with their
guilty silence, were for me the best of incentive to put
my slogan in practise :"Notwithstanding". Special thanks
to my wife who, for nine long years, put up with the
installation in our flat of the structure necessary to the
accomplishment of this project.
I have to ascend to years of the childhood and
to research reasons that have been able to decide me to
kiss a career in order that I had not neither aptitudes,
neither well determined vocation. I do not remind in what
author I have read: Félix qui
potuit rerum cognoscere causas ! Happy who
arrives to render account causes of events ! This
knowledge can not me be personally no usefulness in the
presence facts accomplish and, that by reason of my age, I
then to see to renew. My military career has been enough
staked I have not exceeded the rank of battalion chief
would have - I better succeeded elsewhere ? - In all cases
I would be well ungrateful if I rendered thanks to the
Providence that has not granted me precious compensations,
in reserving me a union of the happiest and the great
satisfactions that have me obtained my children.
The expedition of Crimea (1854-1855) is well
little - in any case, well badly - known of our
compatriots whose a well small number only know * that
this was one of the all time firsts that, after centuries
conflicts English and French were allied in a war and that
they combatted then to sides of Turkishs. * that this war
situated under the reign of Napoléon III. * that it was
illustrated by names of the Alma (river), Sébastopol (city
besieged by allies during 349 days), Malakoff (bastion),
Balaklava (city), Inkermann (bridge). And how much are
capable to quote others military chief names notably or to
bring others precisions on such or such phase of this
countryside ? It is therefore interesting in to learn more
and, then the life of the Soldier is rich of
enseignements. Here, this are souvenirs of one of
combatants of this campaign, - Ernest Varaigne,
(1823-1916) - that us have been confided by two of his
girls. These memories are these a stemming man of a family
deeply anchored in earth of France (Meuse) that tells us,
with the simplicity natural all of generations of this
century, events and things as banal as satisfactions and
daily disillusion (so strong are-they), joys and sorrows
of each to-knock of the life, sufferings - perhaps the
death - of these that are confronted with tests of their
time. What knocks, here notably it is the absence of doubt
and the certainty that taught values are - and remained -
in all circumstances guides him, the engine and the
rampart of actions of the man fashioned by an education
that, then, was the privilege of the multitude...
This present and modest historical test is
strictly limited to the military action led by the Group
of Commandos of Africa in the framework of operations of
the landing of Allies in Provence. I have too the concern
of the truth to does not add that, during this night of 14
to 15 August 1944, three other connected operations were
released. 1/ That of the Naval Assault Group, a unit of
elite of the French war navy ordered by the Captain of
Frigate Sériot, that take Le Trayas, in rim of the
mountain of the Esterel, to a bit less of six kilometers
to the S-S.O of Théoule-sur-mer. Its mission, to the est
of the zone of the landing, was identical to the our, west
side. It failed sadly: this was a hemorrhage caused by an
immense field of mines. Four-twenty ten per cent of losses
this abortive attack, a frightful hecatomb. 2/ That of the
First Special Service Forces USA 7th Army on Iles du
Levant and Port-Cros. Led by intrepid G.I. to orders of
the Colonel A. Walker, the enterprise, nevertheless dared,
succeeds well. 3/ Finally, that of the Airborne Division
Special Forces USA to orders of the Corporal-General R.T.
Frederick, partly deposited by gliders to the interior of
earth, to the the Massif des Maures, to the north east and
to the west of Le Muy in a hilly region around Le Muy
situated to seven kilometers to the S.E. of Draguignan.
This great unit of cover, loaded of the protection of the
north Zone of the landing, fills admirably its mission.
POSTFACE DE MAURICE MOUCHAN Maire-Adjoint de Nice JOUR J... D DAY... D DAY... The first day, that of which
whole depends. The most moving also for actors of this
epic and for his narrator, Jean L'Hostis. Jean L'Hostis
tells simply, but intensely, the first instants of the
great adventure of the Liberation of France by his come
children from Africa and unite under the banner of
Commandos of Africa. They were called themselves the
"Volunteers" and all it were without reticence. They had
combatted in Corsica, during the plug of the island of
Elbe leaving number them their on their path and now they
discover coasts of Provence, the earth of France, with the
emotion that felt all their brothers of Arms in this
circumstance. For Jean L'Hostis, it was the four outcome
years of combat, first clandestine after the humiliation
of the retirement of 1940, then to the great day, within
these Commandos of Africa so expensive to his heart.
Clandestine combat that he relates in an other work of the
same collection under the title "1940-1942 : My
participation to the Resistance in Algeria", and that ends
to the landing allied 8 November 1942, known under the
name of "Operation Torch". This great patriot us suitable
share hopes and audacity of the "Volunteers". We follow
them in their progression, we suffer with them, we cry
their dead and protest their enthusiasm to the evening of
this 15 August 1944 when, all reach objectives, they make
connection with allied troops committed on their traces.
Great and valorous patriot, my Friend Jean L'Hostis,
Intrepid and intractable on chapter of the honor and loan
for brave all dangers for the independence of the Homeland
and its magnitude ! Today pulled to Megève, Jean L'Hostis
leaves us his memories. Can you, reader friend, to find
there the flame that animated these soldiers of our
beautiful and powerful Army of Africa come to rejoin
Resistants of the Interior with Free French to render its
honor to our old and dear Country . Thank you, my dear
Jean, this account viril and exalting to the glory of your
brothers of Arms : Commandos of Africa.
In presenting "From Dardanelles to Sophia
Antipolis", one waits to discover a French as so other
however, the attention is attracted by the two words so
simple : Recruitment of Algiers. This small precision
would knock strong bit the opinion there are more than 30
years Algeria was all simply France. But, after having
been "Africans", then of "Algerians" these men have been
baptized "Black-Feet" and one no longer ceases to speak of
them, in speeches and language books and feathers activate
!... The specificity these men and these women is such
that seekers of the whole world concern in their lot and
to their identity. Whole naturally, national associations
of public interest as the Circle Algérianiste, collect
relative documents to this period of the History of
France. But this is only to this title that the text of
Robert Fouich is fascinated he has concerned also, by
professional and personal reason, relationships that have
me made know very near his career. His testimony presents
a global vision of the curriculum of his family and his
life, at the same time they provide precise souvenirs of
the different episodes and the multiple contacts that one
lined a well filled career. The saga family evokes well
the specificity of the real Black-Foot, the encounter of
the combatant of Dardanelles within the Army of Orient,
with the survivor of a staunch family by the German
occupation of a part of France, in 1917. The installation
of the young couples metropolitan in a French province in
the process of expansion illustrates the life of these
frameworks whose career is unfolded since the large
villages until prefectures and to the capital : Aïn Beida,
Affreville, Blida, Constantine, Algiers. The enthusiastic
and itinerant life of these officials of the IIIth
Republic has developed the Administration indeed, but also
spread the French culture in a country where structures
were again to consolidate after so long centuries of
desertion The youth of Robert Fouich is marked by
peregrinations of schools to high schools according to the
career of the chief of family. To the adolescence, in
1941, Algeria, deeply bruised, is to the hour of Yards of
the Youth. Here is therefore the enrolment to the Grouping
103 of Yards in Blida. The liberation of this legal
service is brief, because came the hour from the allied
landing 8 November 1942. The reminder under flags 10 days
later, conduits the young Fouich, old of 21 years, to
Cherchell, with the School of Frameworks of this African
Army, whose bravery is going to surprise allies and
adversaries of France. Hardly ended the instruction of
Pupils Officiate, 7th RTA is launched in Italy in
direction of Venafro and Cassino. These are the rough and
heroic combats of Abruzzes in the winter 1944, with the
historical opening of the fearsome line Gustav, whose plug
of the Belvédère is the consecration. But 3 February 1944,
is a serious injury that stop this unexpected military
career. Career that is an intermission in the curriculum
of a civil activity that will not cease despite adventures
of a repatriation. There exists, indeed, an Algerian
period that has lasted 42 years, whose half in the public
service to Prefectures of Algiers and Constantine, to the
CATI and to the General Consulate of France during which
demonstrates the state of real French spirit of Algeria
neither great colonist, neither important financier. This
period translates the enthusiasm from creation of a so
beautiful and honorable social work, a fiery patriotism.
The repatriation behaved Robert Fouich to expose with a
great emotion the last instants of the French Algeria,
then the so difficult conditions of the organization of
this imposing and dramatic exodus. The hexagonal sequence
is the 2th life of the author. It is continued to Nancy,
Grenoble then Nice. The Olympic Game preparation of 1968
and the symbol which is its flame, illustrate well the
frequent improvisation that presides over realization of
the grandest to the breast of the C.O.J.O. The apotheosis
of an administrative career was going to appear in a whole
other area and in Nice. To coordinate an administrative
reform and to organize the information beside the Prefect
of Alpes-Maritimes, have been the springboard to a
participation to the economic and local life of the
Department. The study of an urban community with Nice as
chief-place and districts was the primacy of what was
going to become the adjustment the Tray of Valbonne
(1975-1990). The association of the five communes was
going to allow the creation of Sophia-Antipolis,
exceptional floret of the modern technology. Well known
qualities of syndicalism clever for a long time and
reputed administrative organizer, have allowed Robert
Fouich to negotiate between aspirations of the ones and
reticences of others... To lead to its term the beacon
work of Nice and the Coast of Azure, in quality of
Director then Counselor of the SY.MI.VAL. These too brief
lines are an encouragement to dive in the character. To
preface a such collection is an honor that I appreciates
as much better that I have been able to follow by near the
meritorious and courageous effort of the Man during his
implantation niçoise in 1964 to the Direction of
Repatriates, while I was to Counsel myself beside François
Missoffe. Later, being to plugs with the creation of the
Ability of Medicine, I have appreciated the dynamism and
the creative spirit of the Technical Counselor of the
Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, then his faith, shared bit
then by the administrative, in the future of this first
European technopole which is Sophia-Antipolis, whose
reputation is today world. All my most cordial compliments
to Robert Fouich and to this other Black-Foot Michel El
Baze, they are the real luminairistes of the French
thought in Algeria and contribute to immortalize the
beautiful flame destined to honor forever French of
Algeria.
rules that have me "imposed" professor Paul Raybaut and
Ralph Schor when, discovering my collection, they asked me
to demand witnesses to place in their family, their clan,
their steeple to write their account of life, bringing
thus to various discipline seekers - and not only to
historians - materials that will allow their to write the
History of our Country, adventures of our time and to
better apprehend contemporary mentalities. From
Dardanelles to Sophia Antipolis begins, in fact, in 1912
by the arrival in Algeria of some Audois. After the long
years of the Great War. One return in 1919 with his youth

the "bled" and Algiers the White, Yards of the Youth, the
School of Pupils Officiate Reserve of Cherchell, 7th RTA,
the Campaign of Italy and Cassino where Robert Fouich was
hurt to the combat. That is, finally, the passionnante

s'estompent.
Here is what I wrote, there are today 50
years, Tuesday 3 November 1942, while, exited cells of the
fortress of Grudziadz since 28 days, I was a prisoner
enclosed in holds of the Schiff Gravenstein, anchored in
the port of Gdynia, on the Baltic "glauque and disaster".
"Forty-three
approach !.. My heart squeezes... You will be again
alone ! The year that escapes inexorable, had to unite
us before to expire, its end is close hélas ! And it is
in vain that we have waited the achievement of its
promises. Have-we in order that to throw low arms and to
leave us to overwhelm by the desperation ? Non !
Thousand time non ! My venerated parents. More than ever
I ask you a courage and patience start. In truth, I tell
you it: The somber days blur. To the horizon dissipates
already the thick fog to the breadth of which I tried to
transpose my country, and there-low, in the old port of
Marseilles, trains majestic and magnificent the boat of
the return it pulls on its ropes, groans, but will wait
because the time is not far. In the meantime this blest
day ..."
When I wrote this premonitory letter, I ignored, of
course, that my brother Sauveur and my brother-in-law
Roger Desmoulins were member actifs the plot that prepared
the landing of Allies to Sidi Ferruch. The knock of
Algiers had place in the night of Saturday to Sunday
following... I regret that the witness does not spread on
the plug of the Palace of Summer by rebels of the Group
José Aboulker where were committed my parents and
especially, but this barrel the share of all, on judicial
prosecutions of which they suffered then despite the
presence ofthe Allies that obliged Roger to hide and
Sauveur to rejoin clandestinely the General de Gaulle in
Tripolitaine to subtract to researches of the French
police. All two were nevertheless, although civil,
decorated of the Cross of War before to summarize the
combat, this time under the uniform. And then, this
landing in North Africa had a unexpected consequence :
Wanting without doubt to rally the sympathy of this
population non Arab that Germans distinguished very badly,
the Great General Quarter of the Führer, as it was told
us, decided to liberate a thousand of these one called
again Black Feet and it is as well as, thanks to Allies,
to Jean L'Hostis and to his companions, I was found a
month later repatriate in France to be put in "leave of
captivity". That is told with what passion I have read and
I publish the testimony of Jean L'Hostis, the one of the
Poupinel ordering 19th Body of Army, the Chief of
Battalion Mingasson (then Captain), Officer attaches to
the Colonel, ordering 4th Half-Brigade of Algerian
Tirailleurs parked to Morocco, took the commandment of the
Isolated Soldier Deposit of Oran-DI.. Here is his
testimony, written in December 1942 that has me given his
widow, that I publish in this fiftieth birthday, after
many hesitations, it is necessary to tell it, so dressed
me huge today the stupidity of some that this fiery
artisan of this extra-metropolitan resistance could not,
hélas, always however counter, even to prevent the French
or Arab volunteer dispatch on the East front until the 4
November 1942. Follows the testimony that the Colonel
Tostain, Chief of State-major of the General Boisseau
ordering the division of Oran, wrote in December 1945 and
also that more recent, the Colonel G. Mignotte that
dressed to give a point of different view of the sad
events that accompanied the Anglo-American landing of 8
November 1942 in North Africa. Null doubts that the seeker
will find there matter in reflection, especially if he
consults also testimonies of Georges Le Nen appeared in
this collection under N°9 and that of Jean L'Hostis,
N°108.
In some words : They were called Laurent Jacq,
René Fauvel, Antoine Le Bris, Hervé Bénéat, François Balès
and Louis Kernéis. Ancient of the T.A., they have
participated in January 1944 to the burglary of the S.T.O
of Quimper and to the destruction of its 44 000 files. We
would not have been able to tell their history if one of
them, René Fauvel, had not addressed from his prison a
clandestine letter to Anne Guilloux-Tual. This "letter to
chums" that he has allowed us to publish, you will find it
page 23. Thank you, Tit'Anne, thanks to you and to Pierrot
Pichavant, ancient deported to Neuengamme, we have found
one of the survivors of this affair, Jeannot Le Bris, the
brother of Antoine. Jeannot made mover part of the S.T.O.
Decree him also, he has known the long path that has
behaved his brother and his friends to an obscure death in
Germany in 1945. He has well wanted to evoke for us a part
of the life that he has tried in vain to forget. We thank
you all the two, Pierrot and Jeannot : we know how much
has costed you this return in rear to the horror of the
deportation. This are your souvenirs that we are going to
read, all along this notebook. All our thanks equally to
Élisabeth Le Bris, as well as has Jany Grégoire and
Monique Bernard, the two sisters of René Fauvel. Their
documents us have been precious. And how to describe the
heat of their welcome and their friendship ? We do not
forget non more Mrs. J.P. Péton (Catherine Balès) neither
Mrs. Le Roy (Jeannette Cras) that have brought us
precisions that would lack us. Signal finally the
assistance brought by Sir Glorennec of Municipal Archivess
of Quimper, by Sir Collar, Departmental Archivess, and
thank our friend André Monteil, Mallet Pierre and René
Poujade for their accounts that have made us avoid well
errors.
This account of an extraordinary exploit of
the Resistance that attain to destroy all files of
convocation in the Service of the Obligatory Work of the
Department of the Finistère, comes to enrich our
collection thanks to have that imposes my friend René
Poujade, in souvenir of his comrades of the High school La
Tour d'Auvergne of Quimper and particularly of his friend
Antoine Le Bris. Whole there is : The organization to the
realization without break and the imponderable that
provokes deportations, to due arrests to the imprudence.
Today, 14 January 1993, forty year nine have past. Among
the Ancient that remember, the doctor Durand and Maurice
Dirou were all two members of the Resistance. Henri Durand
committed very before in the action against the S.T.O.
since was him that, in the south Finistère, established
medical exemptions for inaptitude to require them the
S.T.O. He had elsewhere to face real boredoms, happily
little before the collapse of the Wehrmacht. Thank you to
all these that have collaborated to the handwriting of
this account that comes to enrich the collective memory of
our Country.
111 - PEYRON Claudine L'HERMENIER Alexandra -: Mamie!.. Raconte!..
small girl Claudine takes its mamie by the hand and all
two with their youth friend Alexandra they are going by
mountains, by paths by lanes of the old villages of the
High Country Niçois. By Throats of Daluis, in the valley
of the Roudoule on the tray of Dina they are going to
relive with grandmother a unforgettable life slice, ever
deleted. Then to the college, under the conduct of their
professor, they write with their delicious style,
histories of the mamie that will come conforter the
History from these heroic cantons that were firsts
liberated from the German occupant. Thus realizes
fortuitously the wish that I had expressed there is strong
long to the breast of the committee of the National
Contests of the Resistance of Nice to publish homeworks of
High schools and College pupils that would have a report
with accounts of life of this collection. The former
refers to testimonies of Toche Albert (N°9) and Mazier
Gabriel (N°100). Null doubts that the perusal of this
study of Claudine and Alexandra will fulfill the avid
seeker of a bit of fresh air
One has a lot written on the second world war
in general, but little of historians or correspondents of
war have leaned on the discreet activity, but how much
efficient, these small units, called Group-Francs or
Corps-Francs, compounds essentially volunteers, officers,
under-officers and men of troop, that take birth in the
course of the war 1939 - 1940, whole particularly to the
breast of regiments of infantry, told of "interval",
between the large works of the Line Maginot. If it has
been relatively well-off to hold to day this notebook of
road until to the arrival to Stalag, in Germany, 22 June
1940, it has more been similarly, hélas, during the
captivity where excavations were very frequent. What
treasures of ingenuity did not was necessary to the KG
(prisoners of war) to subtract these precious relics to
his furious jailers ! And all along his escapade,
Strasbourg (annexed Alsace) to the line of demarcation
with France non busy, it has been practically similarly.
As a precaution, several leaves of the famous notebook
have been destroyed, being by too compromettants to the
period. The account that I have baptized "War Souvenirs -
1939 / 1945", forty years later, comprises many omissions
- and for cause - of inaccuracies and repetitions or
signals by a pagination and a defective touch. If
nevertheless the author of this modest account has been
able to concern the reader and to raise a corner of the
sail relating again misunderstood facts, his purpose will
be reached. He requests all your indulgence and thanks you
.
I find that my word is not always on the paper such that I had in the spirit". Malebranche It has been and it will be always thus and even one can tell that this testimony, if he had been related by his alter ego or by his alias Jean Lux or Paul Jacquot, would have without doubting been recognized by Jeanpierre himself as entirely its one. Yes, alone the plagiarism can be identical, and that is that makes precisely, for the seeker, the wealth of our collection. Then, that Jeanpierre reassures, reticences he expresses in his preface honors that that would want to have been perfected in the relationship of his souvenirs that will delight historians as they have me passionate. 17 June 1941 bells ring to all flight while the flag to cross gammée is hoisted on the church of Mulcey. The Campaign of France is ended for the Corps Frank. The Corporal-chief Jeanpierre takes the road of the exile to Moosburg where he will have the audacity to be made repatriate on Strasburg in being made pass for Alsatian and from there, after adventure multiples, he will get cross the Line of Demarcation and will find his parents to Nice in 28 Mars 1941. And after...What believe-you he does ? It took the combat, of course, but this time to leave of Algiers the White where deposited him the well appointed Sidi Mabrouk. Campaign of Tunisia, Italy and finally return in Metropolis, detached beside the Counter Intelligence Corps of the Headquarters of 7th U.S. Army.
asserted in the image and the caricature that in the
handwriting. You will appreciate, reseachers, scientists
of all disciplines, this French who discribe itself as
ordinary and who has however product there one of the most
interesting testimonies of my collection. Beautiful by the
sincere handwriting, spontaneous. Supernatural by 50
admirable images which I spent a long time to put in page
because I was fascinated by the drawing, precise,
evocative, which invigorates the text and contribute to
make this testimony a masterpiece. War, captivity, escape,
resistance, here is a journey, a slice of "5 sad years" of
a life and for simple purpose, tells-it, to remind a
certain period of his life, his manner to him "not to die
completely when the time will come".
These notes have been written in the alone
purpose to fix the souvenir of a period of my life which
was, to me, very important. They have been written as
memories came back to me without having tempted to give
them a plan. I excuse me beside my possible readers of
their dryness and their loosened style. I did not have
neither the patience, neither the desir to try to make,
souvenirs in the totality agreeable bit, a literary work.
Some details, some facts may seem of little importance and
unworthy to be brought. If I have mentioned them, it is
because they evoke in my spirit, images which, for me,
have a value. Thus it is without any pretension but with
absolute sincerity that these pages have been written.
to Congo and in Norway, the Count Tanguy de Courson de la
Villeneuve was, to the mobilization in 1939 attached to
the General Consulate of France in London. Attached to the
French Connection Mission beside the British Army, he is
assigned as connection officer and interpreter to a
regiment of the English artillery until the 28th May 1940
when he was imprisined in the moment when the regiment
tried to regain England. These are his various experiences
in the English Army fighting in Belgium then as captive of
war in different Stalag that Tanguy de Courson relates in
his testimony, written during the war and that he would
like to see to appear in our collection destined to future
generations, before to disappear, as make so currently our
ancient comrades.
The Light Intervention Body (C.L.I.) has been
formed in 1944 in North Africa by the Lieutenant-Colonel
Huard and its first commando integrated to 20e Division

Black Africa, Pierre Guinet will participate with this
commando to the liberation of Saigon, to the liberation of
provinces of the West around Mytho, to the plug of Ban Me
Thuot on the Moïs trays . Immobilize by an injury while
the Cie A participle in the release of Ninh Hoa and
Nhatrang in the South Annam, he will rejoin the Cie A,
become Commando Émeyriat, in the breast of the Grouping of
Commandos of the Commander Lacroix, or Light Commando N°1.
With this C.L.I. he participates in the opening of RC 9 in
Laos and to the liberation of Hué, before to be free at
end 1946, in Indochina, where he will lead during 18
years, the risky planter existence and manufacturer. This
epic lived by the witness it there has close to fifty
years will be read emotionally by these numerous who
having kept the sometimes painful souvenir of these
events. The seeker will find there, the precision which
invite him for the handwriting a page of the History of
our country in Extrème Orient.
More honor that honors Currency of the Bailli of Suffren This Steps and Operation account of 8th Battery of 67th R.A.A. and units of infantry that it has had the honor to support during the Campaign 1942 - 1943 in Tunisia has been written to remind the contribution too often forgotten that some units of the Army of Africa, despite their weak ways but thanks to their flawless knowledge of their trade and to their very elaborate training, have brought to the final victory. "It is dedicated to all these that, during six month, have made conscientiously and obscurely their duty, in spite the fatigue and the danger, without worrying about honors but for the honor all short". It is a homage to our dead, to officers, under-officers, corporals and gunners of 8th Battery... and to our "brêles". Thus expresses the Colonel Guy Fradin in his preface that I have wanted to put here in exergue while it translates better that I not to would know make it the senses and the finality of this combat imposed by the Nazi hegemony. While the witness combatted on Great Dorsal in Tunisia, I was captive Germans after the miserable Countryside of France of 1940. But later I have known Khenchela, Lambèse, Edgar Quinet, Touffana, Lavéran... Batna, capital of Aurès where has been formed and where has left this famous 8th Battery, village where I have lived during ten years, 1949 to 1959, where are born three of my children in hands of the Lieutenant François Verdez that the Colonel Fradin quotes in his testimony. That is told with what pleasure I have worked on this evocative work for my family in a period of our youth life of couple in this country, traditional stop for the transhumants between limits saharian and the high summer trays, with the regret however to have not met, in the Hotel of Orient, the witness that bequeaths there, to future generations, the account of an epic whose few our contemporaries doubts the importance it had on the ulterior behavior of the ennemy coalition during of the landing in Italy and later in France.117 - Adjudant-Chef LARRIEU -: LA VIE À L'ÉCHELON Campagne de TunisieGUERRE 1939/1945 Écriture : 1992 - Édition Août 1993- 31 Pages PRÉFACE DU COLONEL GUY FRADIN "Si vous voulez avoir une armée, occupez vous d'abord de son ventre". Turenne If you want to have an army, occupy you first to its stomach. Turenne The account of exploits of 8th Battery of 67th R.A.A during the Campaign of Tunisia would be gravely incomplete if it did not make to the daily work of the level leaves it that returns it. This indispensable and obscure work to the life of the unit, was the condition sine qua non of the efficiency and the even existence of this last. Without it, the quick look of the captain, to know it to make the lieutenant, the virtuosity of coin platoons and the ransmetteurs, in a word, the competence and the dedication of whole the personnel of the battery of fire, would not have served to great thing. To exert usefully, it was necessary them the supply in ammunitions, the kitchen, the maintenance of mules and the equipment, transportation, services of all orders that maintained the unit on foot of war. If the level has perfectly filled all its missions, it is largely to the personal action of the Adjudant Chief Larrieu, that has known in often difficult conditions, to maintain the discipline, the ardor to the work and the good mood in this heterogeneous totality. Null better that was not qualified him to give an idea of the life in the level during the Campaign. Here is some extract from his picturesque remember.POSTFACE de Michel EL BAZE L'Adjudant Chef Larrieu illustre de quelques scènes le témoignage du Colonel Guy Fradin paru le mois dernier dans cette collection sous le titre "Des Aurès en Tunisie" A le lire nous ne pouvons que regretter qu'il ne s'étende pas davantage sur les événements quotidiens de la vie à l'échelon, pour notre plaisir, certes, mais aussi pour nous permettre d'entrer plus profondément dans l'intimité de ces canonniers qui ont fait la gloire de cette 8e Batterie du R.A.A. et ont participé à la victoire finale par leur sereine détermination au combat. The Adjudant Chief Larrieu illustrates some
scenes of the testimony of the Colonel Guy Fradin appeared
the last month in this collection under the title "From
Aurès to Tunisia" To read it we can only regret he does
not spread more on daily events of the life to the level,
for our pleasure, indeed, but also to allow us to enter
more deeply in the intimacy of these gunners that have
made the glory of this 8th Battery of the R.A.A. and have
participated in the final victory by their serene
determination to the combat.
Jean Bonnet, currently vice-president of the
Section of High Savoy is one of the rare member of our
association that has replied to my call, nevertheless
reiterated during all our national meetings and reminded
by our Review since 8 years. Is-this to tell that Cross of
War, that decorated them of the Military Value have
nothing to tell ? I believe rather than acts they have
accomplished, witnessed by their quotations appear them
"ordinary" and that from then they think having made their
duty, they have nothing to add. Historians, seekers
estimate they have wrong and me I am grieved to see this
collection impoverished by the absence of these stemming
materials of the again alive memory but for how much time
again ? Thank you to Jean Bonnet to have replied to my
exorde the last year in Thonon les Bains in wishing more
numerous plugs of conscience before, wearied by so of
indifference me also I abandon.
Novembre 1988This chapter of the Historical of 22th Alpine
Hunter Battalion summarizes, for the essential, the text
of the small historical édit in January 1918 to Marostica,
while 22th combatted in Italy, and that the Succinct
Historical document to Nice-Press Barma-in 1921. The
Newspaper of Step of the Battalion, deposited to the
Historical Service of the Army of Earth, has been
consulted with profit. The presentation of some important
events has been able to be specified and developed thanks
to notes and souvenirs : - From Corporal Lassiaz and the
Sub-lieutenant Regard to what concerns the first days of
the presence of the battalion in Alsace. - From Lieutenant
Blanc Officer-Payer, for circumstances of the death of the
Commander de la Boisse. - From Colonel Vergerzac and the
General Lafont, for the account of the drama of the
quotation 108. The text has been enriched cards of the
period offered by the Commander Berger and the
Lieutenant-colonel Girod physician helps-major with the
battalion in 1918. It is illustrated with a certain number
of authentic photographs. One of they, however, that of
the combat of Mandray, does not belong to 22th, but to
13th B.C.A., that combatted to sides of 22 for the
resumption of the Head of the Béhouille. We have inserted
it in this account, because it is characteristic this
combat led by two battalions of hunters against two German
divisions. In this month of 70th Birthday of the
Armistice. November 1988
The Adjudant-chief Jean Marie Buquet (five

Battalions of Reserve, 62th and 102th B.C.A. Editor in
Chief of the Bulletin of Connection of the Battalion of
1953 to 1958, it has devoted to the direct testimony
research that have allowed to write a history of 22th
B.C.A. since its creation in 1855. It is this historical
of some thousand pages that me have been confided, that
Cross of War plan edit in this collection in putting in
emergency testimonies written bei the actors or witness
hand, as it is the case here from the Corporal Lassiaz
Victorin or the General Lafont that ordered 22th of 1916
to 1917 and that brings precisions on a certain number of
events occurred under his commandment. I render homage to
the work that I know considerable Jean Marie Buquet that
revives thus the memory of these that combatted in this
famous battalion that was the Battalion of Nice of 1920 to
1939 then of 1951 to 1976, date of its dissolution and
that figures currently on Table Staffs of the French Army
as Battalion of Reserve, depending the Departmental
Military Delegate of Maritimes Alpes.

He has 84 years She is soon centenary but keep in them the memory of this awful Great War this atrocious war The one and the other deplore that French and Germans, to the name of the even God, had killed without manners and pose the question : God or Religions, which told : I lie. Testifying events on the vivid, the Lieutenant
Borgnis Desbordes relates the occupation by 22e Alpine
Hunter Battalion of the annexed province of Schleswig (or
Slesvig) from January to May 1920, to participate with the
English Battalion First Scherwood Forester and under the
commandment of the Admiral Sheppard, to the protection of
vote operations that had for consequence the return of
this region to the Homeland Mother, Denmark. It has me
appeared interesting to complete the account of the
witness by the historical relationship of the same event
which fact Jean Marie Buquet, Honorary President of the
Ancient of 22e B.C.A. that has already largely
participated in the enrichment of this collection in
gathering souvenirs of the ancient of this battalion that

What is going to follow are my personal

magnificent comrades, extremely courageous soldiers.
Especially, I want to render homage to my subordinates a

Teisseire, Officer of the Legion of Honors, Companion of
the Liberation, retrace the exceptional career of an
authentic combatting, all along ten years of war (1939/
1949), so in Europe 1939/ 1945 that in Extreme Orient,
after 1945. Simple and direct, his purposes line
faithfully the staggering trip of a youth under-officer,
become to officiate to the force of the wrist and to the
chance of combats. I have known the Sergeant, then, to
leave from 1st June 1940, the Chief Sergeant Teisseire
during the battle of France of May-June 1940. He had
twenty six years, with already the advantage of a colossal
experience. I had twenty and exited St Cyr. The one and
the other, we made part 1st Battalion of 6th Regiment of
Senegalese mixed Colonial Infantry (R.I. CS) (6th Division
of Colonial Infantry): approximately 600 Africans and 200
Europeans, frameworks officiate and under officers
understood. 16 May to 20 June, we have undergone the even
leaves, him in a section of fusiliers voltigeurs and me to
the head of a section of machine-gun Hotchkiss (model
1914). 20 June, in the ultimate "start for the honor", 6th
DIC, reduced to 2000 combatants hardly circleed with rests
of other divisions to the south of Tolu, we were hurt the
one and the other, to some hundred of distance meters,
almost to the same moment. Evacuees on the same sanitary
training, installed to the farm of Naroulieu, to the north
of the Mont d'Anon (10 km north-north west of the hill of
Sion-Vaudemont) we there were suitable prisoners on 22 and
transferred the same day on hospitals of Nancy. There have
diverged our respective destinies. 29 July, I succeeded to
escape me in jumping close to Lunéville, of a train of
captive officers on the way to Germany. He had to wait 15
August to falsify company to its guardians. Magnificent
combatting of a committed badly battle and pain driven,
where the courage and sacrificed of the better - they were
numerous, contrarily to some hasty judgements carried to
the period - were helpless to recapture weaknesses engrave
our army, the Chief Sergeant Teisseire went, in tidied it
Free French Forces (F.F.L.) to illustrate in 2th Armored
Division (2ème D.B.) the General Leclerc, and, lieutenant,
to end the war to the Obersalzberg. Beautiful what revenge
for under miserable June officer 1940 ! That is on same
places of our combats of May - June 1940 that after more
of 45 years we are found, during an annual meeting of the
ancient of 6th D.I.C. Because it is souvenirs si alive
that the time not to would know delete them!
There are fifty years we were totality in the
gale of the struggle against Nazi. Our honor was not to
cease the Combat and to rejoin the General de Gaulle.
Thus, you have succeeded to arrive to Tchad and you have
been committed in Free French Forces. You have been these
that have never accepted the armistice of June 1940. I am
happy, in souvenir of our Combat, to express you my deep
and very faithful friendship.
have been openings between Badonvillier and Bréménil. This
night, several contre-attaques have been repelled. This
morning, the armored head detachment strives to open the
path to Petitmont, perhaps Cirez-sur-Vézouve. From there
and why not for the Division, the collar of the Dabo and
the plain of Alsace... The advance knocks successively to
islets of resistance that hang to the terrain. Ahead the
edge from a woods, the armored detachment is a time news
under the enemy fire. Its section of infantry puts new
foot at earth and tent to skirt through drink adverse
lines. But enough rapidly, the chief of detachment
observes to be truly come across the "hard": Order of fold
to the infantry so as to make give the artillery.
Unfortunately, the chief of section comes to be gravely
hurt and has to be abandoned it at the enemy, in principle
under cover in a small fortin. A later bit, the assaut is
given. Spectacle for the less peculiar : this chief of
section exiting his shelter, shelter of blood of the head
at feet, but pistol to the fist behind a German combat
group arms in the air !.. Phlegm and courage. It concerns
Aimé Teisseire. Return in August 1940 In a submissive
prisoner herd to the victor, a hurt that leaves all just
the hospital of Nancy. This hurt, again physically
decreased, has not only decided to escape, but also to
rejoin Free France ! Again is necessary-it to pass to the
execution : to escape, cross the forbid zone, occupied
France, the line to demarcation unravel to be made
allocate in Africa also near that possible territories
rallied to Free France... And from there, to succeed to
earn Tchad. Seen from Nancy, behind barbed wires, it is
more than a view of the spirit. And well, December end
1941, he is to Fort Lamy, capital of Tchad ! Ideal :
Refusal of the law of the herd. Will and initiative : it
concerns also Aimé Teisseire. The Morocco - September 1943
Training of 2th Division Plated. The author of this
preface, transferred 1ère Company of the R.T.S.T to 10e
Company of the new Regiment of Step of Chad (RMT), finds
there the Captain Sarazac and Sub-lieutenant Silvy and
Borochovitch. It makes the knowledge of the Adjudant-chief
Teisseire that chances of affectations had not made meet
up to there. Then, this are Teisseire and him that are
going the most to coast until what the first is hurt this
18 November 1944 and the second two later weeks in Alsace.
Eh well, it has been necessary to wait close to 50 years
and that Aimé Teisseire makes him the honor to ask him to
preface the collection of his souvenirs, in order that
Michel Carage has finally knowledge a few details on his
brilliant behavior all along the trying Campaign of France
of May and June 1940. The reserve and the modesty of the
true warriors. It is equally Aimé Teisseire. In writing,
from notes taken on the vivid, his souvenirs of war, the
Chief of Battalion Teisseire has refused to make literary
work. He brings to the crude state the personal testimony
of a Combatant of Free France, testimony requested by
historians and destined in final to archivess of the last
world conflict. Wish however that this testimony, leaves
to in modify the form, is not only reserved to some
historians and archivists, but could also be read by the
youth of France, to title example of the cult of the
Homeland, necessity of yesterday as tomorrow.
servir d'exemple . It is extraordinary destinies, and
others surprising because the one wonders where the
Witness has been able to draw a such energy, a such
tenacity to realize what dictate him his conscience and
the love his Country. To read the account of life of
Teisseire one has the impression that he is left entailed
by events then, in fact, is he that he has been integrated
there and what heroic manners, by the alone power of his
surly will to defend his Homeland in all circumstances and
on all fronts. His superiors judge him, to the chance of
nine quotation whose he is incumbent:
"An
exemplary bravery". "An exceptional courage". "Is once
more tasteful". "Magnificent Chief of Section always to
the head of his men". "Beautiful type of chief... proof
fact of an intrepidity and of a magnificent courage".
"Magnificent trainer of men". "Officer of all first
order, of a bravery out peer". etc.
Judge in yourself !.. If so is that I could summarize a
slice of his life of Combatant. Born to Puget-Théniers
(Alpes-Maritimes) in 1914, he is hurt during the miserable
Campaign of France in 1940. Captive fact, he escapes.
Crosses the Line of Demarcation. Rejoins the Army of
Armistice. From the French Africa Western, he escapes for
Nigeria britanique to mock Free French Forces. Chad,
Morocco. Arrives in Great Britain 30 May 1944. Disembarks
in France, Campaign of Normandy Seconds time hurt ahead
Paris. Campaign of Vosges, again an injury. Campaign of
Alsace. Germany until to Berchtesgaden. And then, from
fine 1946, he is in Indochina where he participates in the
struggle against rebels before to end his military career
by stays to Madagascar, The Reunion, Cameroon... With the
Colonel Michel Carage, I wish that this testimony could be
Souvenirs that follow concern only the
subordinate officer convoy of Dien Bien Phu to the camp
N°1, the life that we have led to the camp N°1 during
three month and our return. Each convoy has had its each
adventure and each camp its discipline, its brimades, its
rhythm of re-education, its hygiene or rather its lack of
hygiene and subsequent death. Even to the camp N°1,
officers who have past two, three or four years, otherwise
more, have not been submitted to the regime that we have
known. In besides, to resist to the captivity supposes
physical qualities and morals that vary following
individuals. All prisoners liberated in Viétri have not
kept the even remember from this period, but each
testimony, remains a part of the truth.
Fallen from the sky to hands of Viets, the
Adjudant-Chief Perrotin is going to undergo during more of
4 years, 1948 to 1953, sufferings of the captivity. "The
experience" of General Drouin, from May to August 1954
will be happily shorter. These two testimonies show how
much situations and behaviors can be different at one time
and especially how each witness asserts his truth, that
the seeker will compare with interest with the truth of
others, these who have testified on this same subject.
Vom

By reason of our responsibility reverse the

development which imposes us to make a second publishing

that claimed to be - a solely individual testimony.
Angesichts

By reason of our responsibility reverse

After having left his camp in Alsace, the
Chief of Group Antoine Verda begins his war it 17 May 1940
on the Canal of Oise to Aisne to East of Soupir. Its
adventure, which he tells us in simple terms but how much
evocative of this sad period, ends rapidly by the
retirement of its Company, 3e, to the Marne for its last
combat of rear guards, 13 June to Vertus. The duration of
life of 62e Alpine Hunter Battalion was brief. Created 2
September 1939 to the Camp of Caïs, close to Fréjus, it
was dissolved 1st August 1940 to Millau. The historical
that has written and has well wanted to confide us the
Adjudant Chief Jean Marie Buquet, allows us to place the
account of the witness in the environment of actions of
this battalion that was the battalion of reserve of 22e
Alpine Hunter Battalion.
Nachdem
Mai 1940 an
Juni in Vertus. Die Lebensdauer
des 62. Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpin war kurz. Gegründet
am 2. September 1939 im Truppenlager von Cais, nahe bei
Fréjus, wurde es am 1. August 1940 in Millau aufgelost.

While the General Bush tells the battle of the
Aisne to captive officers to the Camp of Mailly, the
Captain Griollet takes notes that we publish here at the
same time that his clean account the Campaign of 22e
B.C.A. begun 9 June 1940 to end 20 June by its rédition to
the German victors. We have wanted to join in these two
testimonies that the Chief of Battalion Désidéri of events
of 22 May to 23 June, documents written by him 1st August
1940 in this same Camp of Mailly, is to tell while
souvenirs were again cuisants.
Juni 1940
begann und am 20. Juni beendet wurde durch seine
Niederlage gegenüber den siegreichen Deutschen. Wir
haben diesen beiden Zeugnissen den Bericht des
Bataillonschefs Désidéri über die Ereignisse vom 22. Mai
bataille.
cartographie.
In a letter, addressed in April 1951 to the
Chief of Battalion Eugène des Touches, that came to take
the commandment of 22ème Alpine Hunter Battalion, newly
reconstitute, the General of Army Corps Lafont, that had
ordered the battalion of April 1916 to July 1917, wrote :
"I
think that in the course the war of 1914-1918 its
characteristic has been "the modesty" in to have
accomplished it with the maximum courage and
dedication."
It is exactly what I have felt to the notes and souvenir
perusal of May and June 1940, misunderstood combatants of
22ème Alpine Hunter Battalion. Their message summarizes
thus :
"We
are not hero. We have simply made, the better possible,
what we had to make, there where we had been placed."
It is to this modesty that want, after so years of
silence, to render justice these some pages that Cross of
War of Nice have accepted, with enthusiasm, to publish in
their collection of testimonies on wars of the XXth
century. That are here thanked these and those that have
brought me the raw material of this account, that this is
in the form reports, newspapers of step, notebooks of
notes, souvenirs, same mid-terms and sometimes vague, but
that allowed precious recoupements, or photographs. The
Lieutenant-Colonel Ardisson, with which I have at length
maintained, has communicated me reports that he had
established immediately the end of combats. To him I have
equally to have known the text of quotations of the
officers and hunters of the battalion, what has allowed me
to situate their personal action in the chronology of the
battle. Mrs. Griolet me has confided inherited documents
of his spouse : the report written by the Chief of
Battalion Désidéri, ordering 26ème Half-Brigade, as well
as a rough of report of the Captain Griolet on the period
of 11 to 10 June, while he ordered 22ème B.C.A. These two
documents have been written in the course of the first
days of captivity, pasts to the camp of Mailly. The
Lieutenant Jacques Minot, that ordered 3ème Company, has
well wanted to correct and specify passages putting in
causes the action of 3ème Company or this own. The
Sergeant-chief Bassecourt, appointed by his chief of
section, the Sub-lieutenant Escande, historiographe 1ère
Section of 3ème Company, has put to day their common
souvenirs. The Sub-lieutenant Merpillat, chief of section
to 2ème Company, has offered me his step newspaper and
that the Sub-lieutenant Beau. The Sergeant Michel Rodde
has given me the copy of its notebook of notes. The
Sergeant-Chief Leruth and the Sergeant Dory, less
prolixes, but whole as precise, their Chronology of May
and June events 1940. Mrs. Lajous and Mrs. Pacaud have
found for me in souvenirs of their spouses, notes that
have allowed to specify some events. The Sergeant-Chief
Lantheaume and the Sergeant-Chief Le Commandeur, all two
of 1ère Company, have made similarly, although prétextant
a lack of memory after so years... André Meng,
chief-accountant of 2ème Company, has related me the
pérégrinations, the errance of the Regimental Train of the
battalion, Lhéry until Millau. Mesdames Griolet and
Lajous, Merpillat, Penchenat, Minot, Dory and Truchon,
have provided photographs that illustrate this account,
whose Maurice Leruth has established the remarkable
cartography.
In
Juni,
wahrend der er die 22. B. C. A. befehligte.
klarzustellen. Sergent-Chef Lantheaume und Sergent-Chef
Le Commandeur, alle beide von der 1. Compagnie, haben es
genauso gemacht, obwohl sie einen Mangel des
Gedachtnisses nach all den Jahren vorgaben...
The Chief of Battalion Jacques Ardisson has
signed 1st October 1940 the Newspaper of Step of 22e
Alpine Hunter Battalion that is here published to the
continuation of the more precise account that he makes the
commitment of his unit of 10 May to 2 June of this same
year. But the document that will be appreciated seekers is
without no doubt the historical that the Adjudant Chief
Jean Marie Buquet has been able to realize thanks to the
passion that he has put to question and to transcribe the
relationships of the witnesses whose he gives the list in
the preface of this work. He brings thus his capital
contribution to the safeguard of the memory of these who
apart to the Battalion of Nice.
Chef
We had left Karachi to 19 hours. The plane of
my friend the Captain Ozoux had unglued just before us.
There was a departure all the five minutes. I tell our
plane because I would travel with the ten that formed my
group the First Group of the Light Corps of Intervention
on the way for the English School of India Guerrilla. We
had to go by air to New-Delhi. From there we had to be
taken as on a secret moving rug. Chut ! Come, silence ! Ah
! we hadnot been talkative in stops. That is that we were
going to become secret agents, parachutists, wreckers,
guerrillas. Exploits of Chindits of the General Corporal
Windgate prevented us to sleep. It was to June I944, you
understand ? And the Indochina suffocated under the
Japanese gag.
Wir
hatten Karachi um 19 h verlassen. Das Flugzeug meines
Freundes Capitaine Ozoux war gerade vor unserem
gestartet.
Englischen Indiens. Wir mussten uns auf dem Luftweg bis
nach New-Dehli begeben. Von dort sollten wir weggebracht
werden wie auf einem geheimen rollenden Teppich. Still !
Kommt, Ruhe ! Ah ! Wir waren nicht geschwaäzig gewesen
bei den Zwischenlandungen. Weil wir Geheim agenten,
Fallschirmspringer, Démolisseurs, Guerilleros werden
sollten. Die Heldentaten der "Chindits" des Brigadier
General Windgate hinderten uns zu schlafen. Das war
gegen Juni 1944, verstehen Sie ?

To appease my fury to read I had no other
solution in the course of my captivity that to try to
decipher the notices or the pieces of newspapers when had
the chance of in to find. That is elsewhere as well as I
had been able to approach the German lungaga and to exert
my spirit to understand it. My rage to write was on the
other hand easier to satisfy, approach by the monthly
correspondence that was allowed us and especially by the
chance that I had to have two notebooks of schoolboy whose
I pervaded pages of deliriums of my hand running on the
paper. This are these miraculously safeguarded documents
that I publish here in souvenir of indeed difficult time
but that I evokes nevertheless today with a certain
tenderness for the young prisoner that known, by the
handwriting, to sustain its spirit in distress.
wusste.
132 - Squadron Leader Gordon CARTER - Quartier-Maître Louis MAREC -: DALC'H MAD ! TIENS BON ! Á tous ces amis, merci.I have met the Squadron Leader Gordon Carter
to the opportunity of a congress of Fugitives of War in
the castle that ex Kronprinz of Germany has to construct
in Loctudy, just before the Great War. The history of its
escape illustrates how much Bretons participated
spontaneously in the Resistance. Gordon Carter has fixed
in Brittany, in Coasts of Armor after having married a
Breton Resistant. I have met Louis Marec, staggering
figure of the Resistance in Brittany from 1940, to
multiple adventures that he has told me. He has given me
documents. It has pulled close to Douarnenez, to the Juch
whose very beautiful church possesses a naive statue of
St. Michel overcoming the Demon. A Satan that could have
personify, in symbolic, the collaboration: Human head well
fed, but ears and paws of pig, supporting horns of cow...
My ancient Professor of Letters of the High school La Tour
d'Auvergne to Quimper, that was the memorable trip, has
confided me his souvenirs again well precise. My
schoolmate René Pichavent has made me benefit from the
saga that he has written. I know the two hero Gordon
Carter and Louis Marec. They have corrected the first
rédactions of this account. This text that I address to
Michel El Baze is therefore that (to my habit) that has
received the nihilobstat of witnesse - we are to the
cinquantenaire. That is well me that had written, but each
of them has told his adventure: I have recorded these
testimonies, then have put them on paper, presented to the
two hero, rectified in various remark function, written
again and presented then re-rectified, before in to arrive
to the account that follows. I have therefore put in form
and placed in the atmosphere of the period, but this are
well their accounts. To all these friends, thank you.
Douarnenez, in Juch, zurückgezogen, deren sehr schöne
niederschlagt, besitzt. Ein Satan, der als Symbol die
Kollboration darstellen konnte : Menschenkopf, gut
Ich habe also

Eisenwarengeschaft in Belfort führte.

To understand the massive commitment of Jews

Landing of 8 November 1942, it is necessary to remember
some date that have to remain engraved in our memories.
That is, from October 1940 that Vichy abrogates the Decree
Crémieux of 24 October 1870 that granted the French
nationality to Jews of Algeria. Myself therefore, I was
counted as such by the Municipality of Algiers although
committed volunteer, decorated the Cross of War on the
front of the Somme, I became liable this Country that I
defended. Better, the Algeria nevertheless liberated of
the German yoke, emphasizes its racial pressure by the
voice and by actions of its General Governor Marcel
Peyrouton that maintains and practices the segregation.
Better again, 14 Mars 1943, the General Giraud, going
beyond decisions of Pétain, abrogates a second time the
Decree Crémieux. Jews see confirmed in the loss of their
nationality and all their rights, are maintained liable
without no derogation. Arrives de Gaulle 30 May 1943 to
share the power with Giraud and this is that 20 October
1943, is near of a year after the Landing, that he gets
conquer otherwise to convince colonists racist and imposes
them the desertion tof his shameful Status of Jews and the
discount in vigor of the Decree Crémieux with,
paradoxically, the support of the Moslem Community and
notably of its spiritual chief - friend of my father - the
Cheikh El Okbi, to that I render here a respectful homage.
Jews can then leave Battalions of Laborers created to
them, leave Camps and Yards where one pens them and
continue the combat fully fledged for the liberation of
the Country, their Country, France.
Besser, Algerien, obwohl vom
deutschen Joch, unterstreicht seinen rassistischen Druck
ohne Rechte ohne jede Ausnahme.
white night the most exalting of her existence while her
spouse and her brother assume their mission to retain
captive all occupants of the seat of the General Governor
of the Algeria, the Palace of Summer. Roger Desmoulins and
Sauveur El Baze were later bit prolixes with me while I
pressed them to tell me their adventure. Two points
however their rest engraved : the important number of
defection of Resistants designated for this mission and
the seat that they underwent from the morrow, the French
Police to which of elsewhere they had by the continuation
to tempt to escape, the one in burrey, the other in
rejoining Free France in Tripolitaine with difficulties
that one imagines. Sad epic that the latter where the one
lives authorities on site, supporting on sentiments
pétainistes of the great majority of the population, to
refuse during a too long time the liberation of the Nazi
yoke that offered their American and English, disembarking
their distant earth to liberate the Country.
When he writes his testimony in form of homage
to his friend, Marcel Roger life again in the souvenir of
his exceptional encounter with Jacques Corrèze who was his
combat comrade and escape, his companion in tests of the
Campaign of France and that will remain his friend, even
after the discovery of his political commitment in The
Cowl that led him until to coat the uniform of officer of
the Wehrmacht to voluntarily combat on the East Front to
sides of these who were then our enemies. The friendship
deserves transcendance, that has not verified it ! Race,
religion, different ideology, it doesn't matter when the
heart speaks, the latter remains always your friend.
The Ancient Combatting that had twenty years
in 1914, were centenaries in 1994, the year of the
cinquantenaire of the Liberation of the Territory. These
that had twenty years in 1944, are septuagenarian ! Is
told it to what extent ocular Witnesses of the last two
wars world see their ranks to lighten, dwindle, dissolve.
In two decades, it will remain that their accounts to
authenticate the History. Otherwise, the monument of the
collective Memory will remain unfinished, in aeternam! De
facto, the combat that the Teacher leads again to the
School for the safeguard of the Memory of the souvenir
will know the even leaves. Révisionnistes and hagiographes
all orders will be able then to falsify the History in all
impunity: Witnesses will have disappeared, after having,
to these that are resided silent, lacked to them to have,
failed to their Mission. And children of their children
will have, to all ever, a vision falsifies the Past lived
by their Forefathers and whole a tail of the History of
their Homeland, of which they will have to support however
inescapable consequences. It is as well as a People cuts
its roots and finishes, anonymous slave, in the
unavoidable collapse of usurper empires of the History. To
each to act, so that it is again time : it is-to-tell
rapidly, very rapidly! The Death does not wait!
In zwei weiteren Jahrzehnten
I have held to what the testimony of René
Petit is the last of this collection because it has me
reminded that, me also, I had lived events told in the
first volume of this collection that show that, if
atrocious Crimes of War, if dreadful Crimes against
Humanity, were committed "All were not barbarians".
To the collapse succeeded the rout entailing
the disorder, the disarray of these combatants of the
Campaign of France that could only undergo the event.
Nevertheless, since 13 June 1940 on the front, Pierre
Knoblauch had the sentiment to have accomplished his duty,
far to imagine that in this day of 17 June, his comrades
would have to deposit their arms ahead of German officers
that render their honors. For him, hurt, that is the debut
of a painful journey that he evokes here. But for France,
from morrow 18 June, the Sign appears : the Call of the
General de Gaulle proclaims the will of France to delete
this sad period of its history. Begin then other
adventures that our collection strives to save the
oblivion.

ARMANDI -:
In prologue to my souvenirs of war, I

complementary course year but, already critical, being
knocked to an Dear Brother, I no longer wanted to continue
and in September 1929 began apprentice electrician. To the
Enterprise wehre I entered, to Monaco City, there were 3
workers and 3 apprentices whose me. Each day, the
apprentice passed to the workshop to take the equipment:
machines, tubes, necessary son for the work to carry it to
back on yards. The saignées to armour tubes us were for
us, to the hammer and to the burin. The work was 8 hours,
six days by week. My salary of apprentice during two
years, was a Franc per day (1 current cent), a small snack
costed 1.25 Francs. I studied the electricity under all
its forms and to 16 years, I entered in the Enterprise
Barbey as fitter editor of tables : clairvoyants and
ringings of hotels. To 17 years, Mr. Champion,
constructive repairer of positions of T.S.F., accepted me
at him wehre I learnt a minimum of repairing of what was
going to become the radio. A later year, in 1934 : the
crisis. Champion dismisses, I become labor of maintenance
to the Hotel Bristol. This same year, I ask my French
naturalization, because born to the foreign father

French. My Father approves me. In March 1935, I am commit
for 3 years to 6ème Climbed Dragons (I believed
motorized), to Paris. The life there was enough rough for
the blue : a permission of exit of the evening by week and
Sunday, trink for horses to 14 hours before the free
quarter. To see my electrical knowledge I was sent, after
my classes to horse, to follow an internship : radio and
téléphonie, to Versailles, then an other of Chief of radio
Position to Verdun and I was appointed corporal. I
followed then an internship of figure to Latour Maubourg.
To two years of service, 1 April 1937, I was appointed
chief corporal, exceptional furtherance for this unit to
75% of Committed. Mars 1938, my Father hémiplégique, is
weakened and in fine of contract, I return to Monaco. In
August I entered to the Service of Ward of the S.B.M.. In
to be going to take my work I stopped me often to the
Brewery Albert 1st. Simone, supports it, suggested me to
occupy to her girl, Jacqueline, returning Great Britain.
This youth person had in her trunk a newspaper of Paris
with my photograph in first page ! To preceding Christmas
the Army had replaced carriers of Halles in strike,
Paris-Soir had me included in its reporting. The day of
Christmas 1938 my Father deceased. Suggestions of Simone,
the photo,... the destiny in March 1939 I married
Jacqueline. Six month later it was the war.
Trois heures d'amnésie à l'hôpital en 1958.I have written these souvenirs of 1939/ 1945,
of memory: Confortée by my quotations (in annex) and
delivers it 29ème D.I.A. to the combat for 1939/ 1940. In
confronting them with these of Reine, my companion of
happiness and misfortune days, hours of hope and
desperation for 1943/ 1945. With the assistance of Roger
Lechner for 1941/ 1942. Aymé has approach continued with
the System Bertin/ Homeland Radio. The named Prat has
learnt it to handle plastic, gélinite, igniters, etc.,
but, wanting more activities, it will adhere to the System
Gallia depending Buckmaster, the French branch of the I.S.
His mother, widow was responsible surveillante of the
cemetery of Monaco where beautiful and rich tombs have
crypts with door of access. It will store there arms,
explosives, documents. After the landing of Provence, he
will be designated to welcome and guide troops allied
during their approach of the Principality. His brilliant
conduct and the work undertaken in the Resistance will
cost him to be one the very rare incumbent Monacans of the
Cross of War. I will have to write him earlier. Roland
Provence would have served me as memory annexes. It has
been delighted to my esteem, my fondness in 1981. I have
sought others colleagues: Félix Vérani lost of view in
1945 to Paris. Where is-it ? Our co-fugitive of 1940 :
Guintrand is deceased as well as Chirouze, the braco of
Lamastre. Eldin the Parson and Pecker, grocer to Antibes,
all two Chief Corporals of the GRD have left us. In 1972 I
had met established Barthélémy to clog to St Tropez, he no
longer there is. Bennati has harvested 20 prison years in
1948 for hand attacks armed. He has finished them to the
cemetery. Jove is deceased end 1948, Dan in 90. Friend and
Fourt have been stopped in 1944, executed, has told me
Maud. Petit Paul has taken his last takeoff in 1980. Maud,
ex Nanette : Louise Le Mab married after war with a
physician lives to Paris. It comes to see us each Summer
with her small children. If someone found an error or an
oblivion I excuse me. I have 76 years and the memory
flinchs. It has been altered by: a/ aggression in 1945 to
Paris, found amnésique, sore to the head, in the metro. b/
Stunned in March 1952 in use, 2 days amnésiques to the
hospital of Hanoï. c/ Bad arrival in the course of a jump
to Blida. Three hours of amnesia to the hospital in 1958.
No doubt he would have looked more particularly towards Jean Armandi, had he known his odyssey for this country which he had chosen as his own : France. One remains amazed when reading this account of an exceptional adventure, serenely decided and which adds a corner stone to the monument of memory. Campaign of France, promoted to the Order of the Army. Taken prisoner, he manages to escape and joins the Resistance movement. Arrested, condemned by the military tribunal in Lyons, he leaves to go back to clandestinely. Once again he is arrested and tortured by the Gestapo, he escapes once more to go back to the Army of Shadow. To prepare for his future missions in Germany ,he is trained as a parachutist in Ringway, England. War being over, then, in occupied Germany, Armandi offers his skills to an antenna of the counter intelligence service located in Wildbad. As early as 1951, he fights against the Viets. Taken prisoner in Dien Bien Phu, he will not be able to escape then. 1955 : Pschycological action in the Mechtas of the regions of Algiers and Kabylia, and once more, the last time though he is sent to prison, for taking part in the attempted coup of the Generals in Algiers. This account of activities of 22ème Alpine
Hunter Battalion in the course of what, modestly, one had
suited to call "Maintenance Operations in the Order", so
in Morocco that in Algeria, follows under a different form
of the testimonies of this collection. It does not concern
a personal account, but of a held daily document , which
confides it a chronological rigor. The fact that I have
lived the almost totality of the stay of 22ème B.C.A. in
A.F.N. at a preferential witness position to the breast of
the P.C. of the Battalion, has allowed me to situate
episodes in their atmosphere, to specify details and in to
replace actors in the framework of the different
situations.
Volume I It is there a testimony, safe that,
instead to support only on his memory, J-M Buquet refers
also to the Newspaper of Step of the Battalion which he
has held during all this time where he was attached to the
Officer of Information. In this first volume, the witness
relates the stay of the Battalion in Algeria from 1956 to
1959. Null doubts that the seeker Algerians and French
will find there, a mine of information on events lived
which will allow them to better situate the action our
Hunters in this country in revolt. Volume II Disembarked
to Ménerville the 8 January 1956, the 22ème B.C.A. stays
to Félix-Faure, Michelet, Bouïra, then in many other
villages of Kabylie in the course of the period from 1956
to 1964 that processes this second volume. Return in
metropolis, after seven last years in Algeria, it will be
dissolved the 15 February 1964 after a plug of Arm to the
Quartier Saint Jean d'Angély in Nice. As tells Mr.
Joseph-André Grammatico, Mayor Attaches, 22e "Battalion of
Tradition of the City of Nice" will have well deserved the
consideration of our countrymen.

I have asked to my friends Volker Gießler and
Jeffrey J. Clarke to participate in the enrichment of our
collection in collecting American and German testimonies
on the occupation of our Department of Alpes-Maritime and
on combats whose it was the theater, more particularly for
the period of the month of August 1944 to confrontations
of the Aution and the German troop withdrawal to Italy.
Unfortunately American and German documents, specially
concerning the period that concerns us present serious
gaps following of facts of war in the country, to what
concerns Germany, and on fronts. The delicate situation as
for sources has been described of precise manner by Volker
Giessler in its introduction to the present volume.
Nevertheless, some documents concerning events in the
South-East France and the territory of the High Italy
adjacent have been able to be discovered. Results of these
researches are published here at the same time that oral
testimonies of 7 of our countrymen whose have personally
lived these events.

They both were happy, happy as are those whose

sacrificed his peacefulness up to the point of going
through the terrible ordeal of deportation in the dreadful
inferno of Dachau and Leitmeritz. To both of you, to him
who is now in Heavens, we send the affectionate tributes
of those who survived the terrible turmoil and cannot and
will not forget.

After a lot others, why, fifty years after, a
new testimony ? Non for new ideas on the sad reasons a
defeat, neither for new reflections on responsibilities
that have allowed it. Albeit of such évènements that put
in repeated incapacity light, political as well as
soldiers, are unpardonable and would not have to be able
to remain without continuation, to the success that drive
to honors. But to remind, by notes taken to the day the
day and a lot of images that deserved to be known, the
will of souvenir, hope and to live, French qualities,
prisoners that could not accept neither circumstances,
neither their inhuman condition. In "photographing" the
III A, by concern of truth, without embroidery neither
novel, I do not forget that there were a lot others camps
neither thousands of kommandos. Some dreadful. All
survivors of all camps will find without doubt in my
testimony what they have lived, their health and their
lost years, forgiving me the dryness of my descriptions.
It is their memory to all that justifies this work. With,
in these difficult times, the necessary reminder of the
historical truth.
Sur dénonciation de qui ?..The first project of Camille-Charles Pinceloup
was to written this that he titled his resistance
activities (pages 99 to 102) and he confided me in 1991
with a multitude of documents it most reproduced share
here. Then, 3 later years came to my demand the account of
life of a combatant in the collapse of the Campaign of
France and the history of his captivity in France then in
Germany that I have discovered sometimes stunned, me that
have known 3 Stalag : 17B in Austria, 20A in Pologne, the
Front Stalag 221 in France, without suspecting that it
existed there such structures and a such activity that
make me understand only today that one could, indeed, not
to prefer to go in Kommando. I am disappointed to observe
that none the120 comrades to that Pinceloup facilitated
the escape in the Forest of Compiègne, non more none of
the125 captive repatriates from Luckenwald to France, by
the train, thanks to the activity of resistance of
Pinceloup and Simon, has left testimony of recognition to
their savior. I regret also that has been eluded the lot
that Germans have reserved to Simon, departed in quality d
Israeli. On denunciation of who ?..

My dear Friend, As I had promised, here is
includes the brush proof of the newspaper "L'Algèrien"
which was to be published in 1960. With some M.N.A.
militants we wanted to save the basics and gets the
Muslims and Europeans Algerians to live harmoniously
together. While the newspaper was to be printed a commando
of fanatics came up and smashed everything. I was at the
Hôtel de Noaille at the time and the boss came to tell me
to run away with no time to waste. I then was accommodated
at the house of Dominique Grimaldi, an European socialist
militant head of the central post office who then finished
his career as head of the post office in Arras, the city
of Guy Mollet. In fact you are a better judge than myself
to evaluate actually if those who were shouting the
loudest are not the ones who lost everything trying to
save it. The other night, Varagnat war talking about
collector items, I think this one is unique and will
shortly gain value.
My companion Auguste Lecœur was a communist he
then became a socialist. I was a socialist and we became
humanists, sending to the devil when it suited us all the
theories and apparatuses. He was supporting me when I was
claiming that the Pieds Noirs had always proved
politically immature. I was saying : After the signature
of the Évian agreements, René Cassin, Nobel peace price,
went near De Gaulle and said :
-
General, you are stronger than Charles Martel. - ??? -
Charles Martel stopped the Arabs in Poitiers, you
stopped them in Algiers.
Any other comments would be superfluous, wouldn't it ?149 - Michel EL BAZE -: • LES "DÉSORDRES" DE CONSTANTINE 1934 PRÉMICES À LA GUERRE D'ALGÉRIE Écriture : 1934 - Édition : Mai 1995 - 52 pages POSTFACE de Michel EL BAZE Août 1934... August 1934... I was going to turn 15. When
reading the Algiers papers I learnt : - that I was
somebody out of the way, a Jew, different from the Arabs
of course, but also from the French coming from Malta,
Spain, Italy and other Mediterranean countries, even from
mainland France - That in Constantine the slaughter of 22
Jews, the murder of three children, the wreckage of 205
shops, were troubles but in no way an anti French
demonstrations. I was astonished then, and started
collecting some newspaper cut outs that I was putting in
my album of Nestle chocolate stickers that I was
collecting. These are the documents that I am publishing
today, with the recollection of the anger I was
experiencing on hearing my French pals of my district of
"Consolation", amused, and happy to hear that Jews were
happily killed, over there, in Constantine, unknowing that
their turn would come, 20 years later.

The Doctor Éric El Baze and Béatrice, his
